Locked Out of Your Safe? Here Is What to Do

Getting locked out of your own safe is stressful, especially when it holds documents or valuables you need. The good news is that in most cases a safe can be opened without unnecessary damage, and the lock can be reset afterward.

First, do no harm

It is tempting to try to force a stuck safe, but prying, drilling in the wrong place or hammering usually makes the job harder and can damage the contents. A safe is engineered to resist exactly that.

Common reasons a safe will not open

  • A forgotten or mis-entered combination.
  • A dead battery in an electronic lock.
  • A worn or misaligned lock, or a broken keypad.
  • Bolt work that has jammed.

What a technician does

A trained safe technician diagnoses the cause, opens the safe using the least invasive method that will work, and then repairs or resets the lock so you keep full control of your belongings. Many of these situations are time sensitive, which is why round-the-clock availability matters.

If you are locked out, the safest move is to stop and call a specialist before the situation gets more expensive.
